There is no partial fit and no workaround at the lug itself. This is the first filter in any wheel search, which is why every reputable listing leads with it.

How do you read a bolt pattern like 5x120?

The format is always the same: lug count first, circle diameter second.

  • The first number is how many lug holes the wheel has. Five is by far the most common on modern performance cars. Four shows up on lighter economy cars, six and eight on trucks and SUVs.
  • The second number is the pitch circle diameter, almost always in millimeters. A 5x120 wheel has five holes spaced evenly around a 120 mm circle.
  • Inch-based patterns still exist, mostly on older domestic vehicles. You will see 5x4.75" written as 5x120.65 in metric. That 0.65 mm looks like nothing, but it is a different pattern and the two are not interchangeable.

Similarly, 5x114.3 (the metric conversion of 5x4.5") and 5x115 are separate patterns despite sitting less than a millimeter apart. Forcing a near-miss pattern onto a hub loads the studs in shear instead of clamping the wheel flat against the hub face, and that is exactly how wheels come loose at speed.

How do you measure a bolt pattern yourself?

The method depends on whether your lug count is even or odd.

  1. Even lug counts (4, 6, 8): measure straight across from the center of one stud to the center of the stud directly opposite it. That distance is your PCD.
  2. Odd lug counts (5, 7): no two studs sit directly opposite each other, so measure from the center of one stud to the outer edge of the stud two positions away, skipping the one in between. That reading is a close approximation of the PCD.
  3. Round to the nearest standard: if you measure roughly 112 mm on a modern BMW, you have 5x112, not 5x111.4. Manufacturers use a short list of standard patterns, so match your measurement to the nearest one rather than trusting the tape to a tenth of a millimeter.
  4. Verify it another way: check the owner's manual, look at the casting on the back of your factory wheel, or run a fitment lookup by year, make, and model. A tape measure across five studs is a sanity check, not a final answer.

What bolt patterns do common performance cars use?

Here is where a few enthusiast platforms land. Center bore is included because it matters just as much as the pattern.

Notice that 5x112 covers both a BMW M3 and an Audi R8, but the center bores are nowhere near each other. That is the trap most people fall into.

Does a matching bolt pattern mean the wheel will fit?

No. A matching bolt pattern means the wheel can be bolted on. Whether it fits is a separate question with four more parts:

  • Center bore: the hole in the middle of the wheel has to seat on the hub. If the wheel's bore is larger than the hub, you need hub-centric rings to center it. If it is smaller, the wheel will not go on at all. We cover this in detail in our guide to center bore and hub-centric rings.
  • Offset: how far the mounting face sits from the wheel's centerline. Offset decides whether the wheel tucks under the fender or pokes past it, and whether the inner barrel clears your strut. Start with our wheel offset guide if that term is new.
  • Width and diameter: a 5x112 wheel in 20x11 will bolt to a car that can only clear 20x9.5, and then rub through a fender liner on the first bump.
  • Brake clearance: the spoke profile has to clear the caliper. Big-brake kits and carbon-ceramic setups routinely rule out wheels that are otherwise a perfect spec match.

Can you change a bolt pattern with adapters?

Yes, and it is worth being honest about the trade-offs. A bolt-pattern adapter mounts to your hub in one pattern and presents a different pattern to the wheel. Quality units are machined from forged aluminum or steel, are hub-centric on both sides, and use their own set of studs.

The costs are real: every adapter adds thickness, which pushes the wheel outward and changes your effective offset, and it adds another clamped joint and another set of torque checks between the hub and the wheel. Wheels are a safety-critical part, governed by industry test standards like SAE J2530 for aftermarket wheels, and stacking hardware in the load path is not something to do casually. Is 5x114.3 the same as 5x115?

No. They differ by 0.7 mm, which is enough that the studs will not line up with the lug holes cleanly. Do not force it, and do not use conical seats to split the difference. Treat them as entirely separate patterns.

Can I put a 5x120 wheel on a 5x112 car?

Not directly. It would require bolt-pattern adapters, which change your effective offset and add another joint to the load path. When a wheel is available in your car's native pattern, that is always the better answer.

How do I find my bolt pattern without measuring it?

Does bolt pattern affect wheel strength?
