How do you convert offset to backspacing?
The math is straightforward once you know the wheel's width. Remember that a wheel's advertised width is measured bead seat to bead seat, and the overall width is about one inch greater (roughly a half inch of flange on each side). That is where the +0.5" in the formula comes from.
Backspacing (in) = (Wheel Width ÷ 2) + (Offset ÷ 25.4) + 0.5
- Take a 9-inch-wide wheel with a +35 mm offset.
- Wheel width ÷ 2 = 4.5"
- Offset in inches = 35 ÷ 25.4 = 1.38"
- Add the 0.5" flange allowance.
- Backspacing = 4.5 + 1.38 + 0.5 = 6.38 inches
Run the same 9-inch wheel at zero offset and backspacing drops to 5.0 inches, moving the assembly a little over an inch outboard. To go the other direction, from backspacing to offset: Offset (mm) = (Backspacing − (Wheel Width ÷ 2) − 0.5) × 25.4.
How do you measure backspacing on a wheel you already have?
You only need a straightedge and a tape measure:
- Lay the wheel face-down on a flat surface so the inboard lip points up.
- Set a straightedge across the inner rim edge, spanning the barrel.
- Measure straight down from the bottom of the straightedge to the mounting pad (the machined surface with the lug holes).
- That distance, in inches, is your backspacing.
Measure the mounting pad itself, not the raised center registration or a spoke, or your number will be off.
Why does backspacing matter for fitment?
Backspacing decides where the tire and wheel live inside the wheel well, and that controls two failure modes. Too much backspacing pulls the assembly inboard, where the tire or barrel can contact the strut, spring, or fender liner.
